Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Business? Check in 5 Minutes (Free, No Tech Skills)

More people are asking AI "who should I call?" instead of scrolling through search results. Here's how to see, in 5 minutes, whether your business gets named.

You may already check where you show up on Google. This is the same idea for AI chats. You ask ChatGPT and Gemini the question your customers ask, and see who they recommend. Then you ask AI what would help your business show up. It's free, and you don't have to change anything on your website to do the check.

Never used AI before? That's fine. Every step is tiny.

Time: about 5 minutes for the check, plus 30 minutes for the fixes.

What you'll need

  • A computer or phone with internet
  • A free ChatGPT account at chatgpt.com, and Gemini, which is free at gemini.google.com if you have a Google account
  • A notepad, or a new Google Sheet (free at sheets.google.com)

Two words you'll see

AI chat: a website where you type a question and a computer program types back an answer.

Prompt: the message you type to the AI. You can copy ours and paste it in.

Step 1: Ask the question your customers ask

First time? Make a free ChatGPT account (you only do this once):

  • Open your web browser. Click the address bar at the top, type chatgpt.com and press Enter.
  • Click Sign up. Use your email, or "Continue with Google" if you have Gmail.
  • If it asks you to pick a plan, pick the free one.

  • Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.

  • Click in the message box at the bottom.
  • Copy this prompt, paste it in, and fill in the [brackets]:
I live in [your town, state]. I need a [your trade, like roofer or
plumber] for [a common job, like a leaking roof]. Which local
businesses would you recommend, and why? Please list them.
  1. Press Enter. Read the list.
  2. On your notepad, write down: Did my business show up? (yes / no) and Which businesses did it name?

Step 2: Ask Gemini the same thing

  1. Click the address bar, type gemini.google.com and press Enter.
  2. Sign in with your Google account if it asks.
  3. Paste the same prompt and press Enter.
  4. Write down what it said, the same way.

Good to know: the answers can change from day to day and from person to person. That's normal. Do this check once a month, not once an hour.

Step 3: Ask AI what would help

Go back to ChatGPT. In the same chat, paste this:

My business is [business name] in [town]. Our website is [website, or
"we don't have one"]. Based on what you can find, what do you know
about my business? Then give me a simple checklist of 5 things a small
[trade] business can do to be easier for AI chats and Google to
recommend. Plain words. For each, say how long it takes.

Press Enter and read the checklist.

Check it for mistakes. If it says something wrong about your business (wrong hours, wrong phone, a service you don't offer), write that down. That's often the first thing to fix.

Example only (made-up output to show the shape):

  1. Fill out every section of your Google Business Profile, including services and hours. (20 minutes)
  2. Make sure your business name, address and phone are the same everywhere online. (30 minutes)
  3. Ask happy customers to mention the job and your town in their review. (2 minutes per customer) ...

Step 4: Do the easiest fix this week

Most checklists come back to the same few basics. Pick one:

Fill out your free Google Business Profile. Go to business.google.com, sign in, and fill in every box: services, hours, service area, and a few real job photos.

Ask for reviews that say what you did and where. Copy this prompt into ChatGPT:

Write a short, friendly text asking a happy customer to leave a Google
review. Ask them, if they don't mind, to mention what job we did and
their town. No pressure. Under 50 words. Link: [your review link]

Fix wrong info. If AI said your hours or phone are wrong, update them on your website, your Google Business Profile, and Facebook so they all match.

What not to fall for

  • Nobody can promise you'll be the #1 AI pick. If someone sells you a guarantee, walk away.
  • You don't need a paid tool to do this check. The free chats above are enough to start.

Your next step

Do Steps 1 and 2 right now and write down what you see. Then come back next month and check again.
