Snap One Photo, Show the Customer the Finished Job Before You Start (Free ChatGPT)
People can't always picture what you're describing. Take one photo at the walk-through, and free ChatGPT can make a "here's the idea" picture of the new fence, patio, paint color or garden bed to send with your quote.
Homeowners are already uploading photos of their yards and rooms to AI to dream up new looks. You can use the same trick on your side of the job: show the customer the idea in a picture instead of only words. You still decide what you can really build and what it costs. The picture just helps them see it.
Never used AI before? That's fine. Every step is tiny.
Time: about 15 minutes the first time, 5 minutes after that.
What you'll need
- One clear photo of the spot you'll work on (taken with the customer's OK)
- A free ChatGPT account at chatgpt.com (we show you how below)
- A plain idea of the job, like "black aluminum fence along the back" or "gray siding, white trim"
Two words you'll see
AI chat: a website where you type a question and a computer program types back an answer.
Prompt: the message you type to the AI. You can copy ours and paste it in.
Step 1: Take one good photo
- Ask first. Say something like: "Mind if I snap a photo so I can send you a picture of the idea with the quote?"
- Stand back so the whole area fits: the yard, the wall, or the side of the house.
- Hold the phone level. Daylight works best.
- Leave out people, cars with plates, and the house number if you can.
Privacy check: if the photo shows a face, a license plate or the house number, crop that part out before you upload it. Read what not to type into AI.
Step 2: Open ChatGPT and add the photo
First time? Make a free ChatGPT account (you only do this once):
- Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari or Edge). Click the address bar at the top, type chatgpt.com and press Enter. Or download the free ChatGPT app on your phone.
- Click Sign up. Use your email, or "Continue with Google" if you have Gmail.
- If it asks you to pick a plan, pick the free one.
Backup: Gemini (free at gemini.google.com) can also edit photos. The same prompt works. (Claude at claude.ai is great for writing, but it doesn't make pictures.)
- Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
- Click the + (plus) button at the left side of the message box.
- Pick the option to add a photo, then choose the photo you took.
- Wait until you see a small preview of the photo in the message box.
Good to know: the free plan includes a limited number of pictures each day. One or two per job is plenty.
Step 3: Paste this prompt
Click in the message box, copy this prompt, paste it in, and fill in the parts in [brackets]:
Edit this photo to show one idea for a job I'm quoting.
Change ONLY this: [what you'd build or change. Example: add a
4-foot black aluminum fence along the back of the yard, with one
gate on the left].
Keep EVERYTHING else exactly the same: the house, windows, roof,
trees, driveway, neighbors' houses, sky and camera angle.
Do not add furniture, people, plants or anything I didn't ask for.
Make it look like a normal daytime phone photo, not a fancy ad.
Press Enter and wait a minute. Pictures take longer than words.
It changed things you didn't ask for? Type Try again. Keep the house and trees exactly like my photo. Only add the fence. and press Enter.
Want a second option? Type Now make the same picture with a white vinyl fence instead. Two choices side by side help people decide.
Step 4: Check it, label it, then send it
- Look closely. You're the expert. If the picture shows something you can't build, can't build for that price, or that won't work on that ground, don't send it. Try again or skip it.
- Save the picture: press and hold it (phone) or click the download button (computer).
- When you send it, say plainly it's an idea, not the final job. Copy this line into your text or email:
Here's a quick AI picture of the idea so you can see it.
It's a concept, not an exact match. The quote has the real
details, and I'll walk you through any changes in person.
- Send the picture with your quote, the same way you always do.
Example only (made-up business, made-up job):
Oak Hill Fence & Deck snaps a photo of a bare backyard, asks ChatGPT to "add a 4-foot black aluminum fence along the back with one gate on the left," and sends the customer two pictures: black aluminum and white vinyl. The text says: "Here's a quick AI picture of the idea so you can see it. It's a concept, not an exact match."
Check before you send
- Did you get the customer's OK to take the photo?
- Does the picture match what's in your quote? Same style, same color, same size?
- Did you say clearly that it's an AI picture of the idea?
- Did you crop out faces, plates and the house number?
Never do this
- Don't post the customer's house online without asking them first.
- Don't promise the job will look exactly like the picture. AI guesses. Real ground, slopes and materials don't.
- Don't let the picture set the price or the plan. Plants, materials, measurements and anything structural come from you, not the AI.
- Don't pass it off as a photo of a finished job. It's an idea picture, and you say so.
Make it even faster next time
Save the prompt in the Notes app on your phone. At the next walk-through, take the photo, fill in the one line in brackets while you're still in the truck, and send the picture with your quote that night.
Common worries
"What if the picture looks fake?" Sometimes it will. Ask for "a normal daytime phone photo" and try again, or skip it for that job. A plain sketch on paper still works too.
"Is it okay to use a photo of their house?" Ask first, use it only for their quote, and don't post it anywhere without their OK.
"It made the fence the wrong height." Be more exact: "about as tall as the bottom of the kitchen window." Then try again.
Your next step
At your next estimate, ask the customer if you can snap one photo. That night, run the prompt and send the picture with your quote.
